JOSH LANCASTER PAINTINGS

After wanting to be an artist since he was a kid, Josh Lancaster eventually submitted to the pressure of destiny (the calling, not the church) and in 2016 moved to the Hawkes Bay with brush in hand to have a proper go at it. His landscapes often capture the geography of the heart - the places we call ‘ours’ and that define who we are and where we are from. Josh’s artistic endeavours are achieving similar plaudits to his reputation as one of his generation’s top advertising creatives. His debut solo show & subsequent show have been sell outs. Josh’s bold lines and evocative pallet make for distinctive, original artworks that happily hang in homes from NZ’s deep south to NZ’s shallow north, and even in some fancy overseas places like Hong Kong and Dubai and London and Waiheke. Josh’s studio is based in Havelock North near Tainui reserve where he lives with his 3 young sons, Lennox, Archie and Spike. The four of them can often be spotted on Joll road having a massive row over who’s the best at Fortnite, or who just cheated playing Rock-Paper-Scissors…. Eventually though, they fall asleep and the ensuing silence and stillness allows for a bit of painting to happen.

THE ANZAC PINE
500mm x 700mm

This print is called THE ANZAC PINE. It was one of the hero pieces from my 2019 Hawkes Bay exhibition HILL COUNTRY which explored epic familiar views from up Te Mata Peak. This print features the gnarly old pine that sits off the northern shoulder of the peak. From much of Hawke’s Bay this tree appears as just a black blob towards the top of a distant Te Mata Peak. It actually has a really cool story. It was planted many years ago by Hastings man, and Gallipoli soldier, Mick Howard with seeds derived from the original Pine that stood at the approach to ‘plateau 400’ at Gallipoli. The Turks had cut down all but one of the pine trees lining the slopes so it became known as ‘lone pine ridge’ and this is the grandchild of that tree. It is one of 4 giclee prints from the show and is a signed and numbered limited edition of 1/20. The print itself is 500x700mm.

KIRSTEN'S CORNER, 1/15
A1

This print is called KIRSTEN'S CORNER a reminder of what Summer looks like. It's a place called Kirsten's on the back road between Havelock and Napier and it's where we get our cherries from at Christmas time. During winter it's closed, but as summer builds so do the number of different fruit signs hanging off the old truck. Handy as for telling if it's almost half-past strawberries or more a quarter to plums... This is a signed limited edition of 12 giclee prints and was one of the hero images from my 2018 solo show Bits of the Bay in Havelock North.

THE BEACONS 1/12
600mm x 600mm

This print is called THE BEACONS and features the 2 old wooden beacons off the northern end of the Hawkes Bay airport.I've always thought they were old runway lights but they're not. They were the world's first ever shipping beacons made with reinforced concrete bases, and when lined up guide ships through a narrow channel in Pania reef and into the port of Napier. Before the 1931 earthquake the far beacon used to sit on an island in the inner harbour. Now days that island is a grassy knoll surrounded by more sheep than snapper. This print is 610x610mm square and is a signed limited edition of 12 giclee prints.
